Sticking with tradition, Brian Cohen and Overland Meat Co. employees lined up 364 Thanksgiving Day turkeys outside the store on Friday.
Owner Cohen said most people pre-order their turkeys, but some are available for walk-in customers. He estimated the turkeys would be sold out by today.
Since 1987, employees have stacked turkeys outside the store, a tradition that Cohen’s father Mark started and Cohen continued after taking over in 2005.
The 364-turkey order isn’t as large as it used to be, Cohen said. When his dad owned the store, the largest order Cohen saw was around 500 turkeys — and that was about 10 years ago.
Most of the business the store receives is local, Cohen said.
“Even with difficult times, it’s the locals that keep the door open,” Cohen said.
Cohen said second-home owners also pre-order turkeys from him on Thanksgiving. He said he had a lot of return orders from that group last year.
The largest turkeys that are ordered usually are about 30 pounds, said Wayne Danyow, who has worked at the store since it opened.
“They grow ’em larger, but you can’t fit them in an oven,” Danyow said. “When they get that big, they call them ostriches.”
The holiday season is likely to continue to be busy for Overland Meat. Cohen usually orders 120 prime ribs for customers at Christmas time.
The shop is at 2227 Lake Tahoe Blvd., Suite C, in Kings Trading Post. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call (530) 544-3204.

Realtors group hosts awards dinner
The South Tahoe Association of Realtors will host its annual officer installation and awards dinner next month.Dede Bacon, South Tahoe Association of Realtors 2008 president, will pass the leadership role to Barbara Childs, the 2009 STAR president.
Other officers and directors will be named for 2009, and awards will be presented, including Realtor of the Year award. Carl Ribaudo of Strategic Marketing Group will be the keynote speaker.

Red Hawk Casino opening Dec. 17
Red Hawk Casino has scheduled an opening of 7 p.m. Dec. 17. The casino in Shingle Springs will have 2,000 slot machines, 75 game tables, six restaurants and four bars.
Peter Fordham is the casino’s general manager, and the property this month named Terry Contreras as assistant general manager.
The casino is at the new Red Hawk Parkway exit on Highway 50, just 30 minutes east of Sacramento.
