REDDING, Calif. (AP) — Redding City Council members have decided to give up their retiree health insurance benefits in an effort to save the city money.
The five council members said Tuesday they won’t sign up for the medical, vision and dental plans that are offered to them when they retire.
A council report shows the city will save about $8,000 for each member.
Newly elected council member Missy McArthur says the council should cut its own expenses ahead of expected budget cuts next year.
While members agreed to give up their retiree health benefits, they didn’t feel the same about their pensions. The council voted 3-2 to continue participating in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System.
