SOUTH LAKE TAHOE Winter storms allowed the second of three South Shore area ski resorts to open over the weekend, with the lone holdout optimistic about following suit.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort opened its Chair 5 for skiing and snowboarding Sunday. The resort received up to three feet of snow over the weekend, and additional lifts could be running as soon as today, according to the resorts Web site.
Sierra-at-Tahoe expects to open soon, and representatives encouraged skiers and snowboarders to check the resorts Web site for the latest.

On Monday night, the Web site showed that Sierra-at-Tahoe had received 14 inches of new snow in the past 12 hours.

The snowfall heartened tourism officials as well.
Mother Natures finally got it right, and shes cooperating to supplement our snowmaking efforts, Carol Chaplin, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, said in a news release. With the new snow, South Shore will be rockin and rolling over the holidays and into the new year.

Heavenly Mountain Resort which reported 10 inches of new snow on Monday opened Upper California Trail and Tamarack Return on Monday, and resort officials expect additional runs on the California side to open this week.
Canyon Express, Powder Bowl Express, Gunbarrel Express, Patsys and the Aerial Tram are lifts expected to open Thursday, said spokesman Russ Pecoraro.
Runs on The Face are not yet ready to open, but Gunbarrel Express will be running to take skiers to other areas, Pecoraro said.
The priority is to get the California side open, and we will get to Nevada once thats done, Pecoraro said. Heavenly opened for the season on Nov. 28.
