1. Whittell does it again Whittell High wins sixth straight Nevada 2A state volleyball championship, setting the state record for that classification. The first five titles were with Dan McLaughlin as coach, while No. 6 came under first-year coach Tony Fathergill.
2. Daly to become a Tar Heel Whittell High junior Hannah Daly receives a scholarship to the University of North Carolina, the most accomplished womens program in the country. The Tar Heels won their NCAA-record 19th national title in December. Daly, who plays club soccer for an Arizona team, is graduating a year early to enroll at Chapel Hill this fall.
3. Smith goes back-to-back South Tahoe High junior Kelsey Smith repeats as Nevada 4A cross country champion, the schools second individual state title in two decades. She also won two track and field state titles.
4. Anderson on top again Tahoe Paradise's Jamie Anderson makes her claim as the top womens slopestyle rider in the world, repeating as the Winter X Games gold medalist in slopestyle. She also finishes the year first in the Swatch TTR (Ticket to Ride) World Snowboard Tour.

WHS football makes playoffs Whittell High football continues its turnaround by making the 2A state playoffs for the first time since 2002, a testament to the efforts of coach David Atherton, a former WHS player. In six years, WHS went from not having a team in 2003, to breaking a 26-game losing streak in 2007, to earning its first playoff appearance.
6. Friday Night Lights Whittell High installs stadium lights for football and soccer events. The Warriors hosted their first-ever high school football under the lights on Sept. 5, a 22-18 loss to Lovelock.
7. Palmer doesnt let up South Shore snowboarder Shaun Palmer, 39, captured the 48 Straight Jeep King of the Mountain mens boardercross overall series title in Sun Valley, Idaho. Hes still a member of the U.S. Snowboard A team.
8. Garratt lands scholarship South Tahoe High graduate Nick Garratt becomes a full-ride scholarship player at perennial college football power USC.
9. Big Mac wins arena league title Former STHS football player Garrett McIntyre made three tackles in a loss to Philadelphia in the Arena Football League championship with the San Jose SaberCats in July.
10. WHS, Szendrey win state golf titles Jonathan Szendrey won the Nevada 2A state individual golf championship, leading the Warriors to the team title as well.
