In 1968, a group of concerned citizens assembled to discuss the preservation of history in the Lake Tahoe Basin. To mark this 40-year milestone, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society has a fun day of activities planned for June 14.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the museum will be open and free to the public. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be sold by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, with proceeds to benefit its animal-care mission.

This summer's featured exhibit is "Pony Express" and includes a replica of the leather mailbag signed by the riders who carried it from Missouri to Sacramento. The bag is called a mochila, the Spanish word for knapsack. The historic log cabin behind the museum is furnished and will be open for viewing.

The museum is being updated and has several new displays, along with a separate museum shop and bookstore. New hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Monday.

The June 14 evening program, titled "Generations: Tahoe's Enduring Pioneer Families," will honor attending representatives from some of Tahoe's most notable pioneer families, including Baldwin, Barton, Bliss, Celio, Dunlap, Ebright, Hildinger, Johnson, Park, Craven and Richardson.

The evening activities will begin at 6 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd., across from the Historical Society Museum, and will include wine, beer, appetizers and dessert. Reservations for the evening are limited but still available at $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers.
