SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Authorities who had been looking for a man in connection with racking up hundreds of dollars in charges with a stolen credit card was discovered in jail after being arrested on an unrelated probation violation charge.

South Lake Tahoe Police on Thursday charged Richard Scott Peters, 45, with impersonation, burglary, forging a name on a credit card, using credit cards without consent of owner and probation violation following the Dec. 20, 2008 theft of a credit card from inside a car at the mid-town 7-Eleven.

According to police and the victim, the suspect allegedly opened the car door as the victim was filling the gas tank and grabbed her wallet and shut the door softly. The victim said that prior to filling up she pulled her wallet out of her purse to pay for the gas and then put the wallet on the passenger seat as she filled up her tank.

Surveillance shows the suspect using the card at six different locations around town, racking up hundreds in fraudulent charges.

An El Dorado County law officer contacted the officer in charge of investigating the case after seeing the photograph inside the Tahoe Daily Tribune. The county officer sent police a photograph of the suspect.

After examining surveillance photos and videos of the crimes, South Lake Police Officer Doug Sentell determined Peters to be the suspect in the thefts.

Peters was charged on Thursday and cannot be released on bail because of multiple probation violations, Sentell said.

A transient living in Lake Tahoe and Walnut Creek, Peters was booked into El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe by the El Dorado County Probation Department on Dec. 29 for a violation of his probation, authorities said.

Peters has had probation violations here and in Contra Costa County, Sentell said.

“I went over to the jail, checked the property that he had been booked with at the time of his arrest and found the plaid flannel jacket that he had been wearing — seen on the security videos — during the crimes,” Sentell said.

Police received several anonymous tips by readers of the story. One person said the person’s name was “Scott” and that he was a transient.

Motorists should locked cars and their wallets close to them if they are outside of their vehicles, Sentell said.

“Criminals do take advantage of situations. What happened happened quickly so please lock up your cars to avoid being a victim,” he said.
