Whittell repeats as regional golf champion

Whittell High’s last visit to Ruby View Golf Course in Elko didn’t go so well. For one of the few times in the past decade, the Warriors didn’t capture the Northern 2A-1A championship.

The Warriors didn’t allow history to repeat itself in the regional tournament Wednesday in Elko. Whittell captured its second straight championship and sixth title in the past nine years.

Incline’s Justin Holets, however, did end one Whittell championship run. Holets captured the individual title with a sizzling, 3-under 69, halting the Warriors’ three-year streak of having the tournament’s low scorer. Whittell’s Michael Koskin finished runner-up.

Complete scores were expected to be available later this evening.

Less than a week ago, Incline was 18 shots better than the Warriors at a regular-season-ending tournament at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City.

The Warriors will attempt to win their third consecutive state championship when the 36-hole tournament begins May 19 at Genoa Lakes Course. The tournament finishes May 20 at Edgewood. Tee times begin at noon on both days.
