Committee to identify unmet community health needs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Barton Healthcare System's Community Advisory Committee (CAC) met for the first time last month. The objective of the CAC is to identify unmet health needs of the communities served by Barton Hospital.

The CAC is currently made up of 15 volunteers representing diverse sectors of the community including Dr. Paul Killpatrick, President of LTCC; John Williams, CEO Barton Healthcare, Judy Cefalu, Barton Auxiliary; John Collins, Senior Center; Kindle Craig, Barton Foundation; Terry Daniels, SLT Chief of Police; Adrian Escobedo, LTUSD; Michelle Feeney, Barton Community Clinic; Hector Reyes, Public Health; Margaret McKean, LTUSD Nurse; Mike McLaughlin, Feldman, Shaw & McLaughlin; Kelly Neiger, CPA; Dr. Dan Norman; Dena Schwarte, Barton Healthcare Board; Sue Shannon, Principal, Whittell High School; Delicia Spees, Family Resource Center; and Michael Ward, consultant.

“Community Advisory Committees offer hospitals an invaluable wealth of information and this specifically allows Barton to really get to the heart of the health concerns in our community,” said John Williams, CEO of Barton Healthcare. “The Latino Family Health Day that we hosted last month at Bijou School is just one example of how Barton is reaching special populations that may have not been reached. With the help of the CAC, we will identify more of these groups and meet the concerns of those who are in the greatest need.”

In their first year the CAC will oversee, with the Barton Foundation, the selection of this year's Barton Health Grants recipients which is offering up to $25,000 to local health-related programs; select the recipient for this year's Spirit of Philanthropy Award; and give input into Barton's Community Benefit Report.

“I am personally and professionally interested in promoting health within our community,” said Dr. Paul Killpatrick, LTCC President and CAC Chairman. “By working together, we can create a common understanding of what the health needs are in our community and develop new ways to address these concerns.”
