Woman killed in Echo Summit crash

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — A 66-year-old woman died Wednesday morning after losing control of the Dodge pickup truck she was driving over Echo Summit.

At about 11:15 a.m., the woman was heading east on Highway 50 when she lost control of the vehicle at the left hand turn at the top of the pass, said California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Gartner.

The woman swerved across a lane of oncoming traffic and hit the embankment on the side of the road, causing the truck to roll over, Gartner said. The woman was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

The car ended up on its roof and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Gartner said.

Alcohol is not suspected as a factor at this time, although the crash remains under investigation, Gartner said.

Authorities have not released the identity of the victim pending notification of next of kin.

Highway 50 was closed for more than an hour on Thursday because of the crash.
