It's been eight years since terrorism changed America on 9/11, and today Barton Health and the entire community celebrate emergency preparedness education with a free event, from 2-8 p.m., at the South Lake Tahoe Airport.
There will be more than a dozen free medical screenings, including those offered by orthopedists Dr. Robert Rupp and Dr. Robin Tomita.
Area agencies that will also participate in the event, dubbed “We Will Never Forget,” include the South Lake Tahoe Airport, the city of South Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Health Department, South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, Lake Valley Fire Department, Emergency Management Community Coalition, American Red Cross, CALSTAR, Tahoe Youth & Family Services, Nevada Radon Education, Kahle Community Center, Barton's Emergency Department and Community Clinic, Barton Foundation, Barton University and Public Relations, Barton Auxiliary, Barton Financial Services, California Highway Patrol, BlueGo and Lake Tahoe Humane Society and SPCA.
Whether you live in California or Nevada, residents will receive a free radon test kit — appropriate for their state — and testing education.
To make sure that every family has prepared an emergency plan, the American Red Cross will host workshops at 4, 5 and 6 p.m.
The entire family can receive free expert information and instructions on how to organize an emergency disaster plan, then break into family groups and design personalized disaster plans, maps of their homes and escape routes.
People may tour fire trucks, ambulances, the CALSTAR helicopter and the city's Emergency Command Vehicle; take part in children's fitness activities; and learn how to construct their own personal Disaster Backpack kit, either from scratch or from a Barton Health backpack or one from the American Red Cross.
Medical screenings include the two orthopedic checks; diabetes screenings; blood pressure and oxygen level screenings.
Visitors can learn to drag friends to safety, how to apply pressure dressings and splints, and receive hands-on CPR and AED instruction, dog and cat first aid and CPR, pet safety during an emergency, and flu prevention and hand-washing activities.
There will also be advice on medical financial assistance and filling out an advanced directive to make one's health-care wishes known in advance of a catastrophic illness.
All booths and screenings are free to the entire family, with no appointments necessary.
Special BlueGO routes will take guests to the airport every hour on the hour from 3-7 p.m.
