The draft environmental document for reforestation of about 4,320 acres of Eldorado National Forest lands burned by the Fred's fire near Kyburz in 2004 is available for public comment.
Previous projects addressed the need to remove dead trees, repair damaged roads, provide for public safety and replant vegetation. The draft document proposes to further restore the area impacted by the Fred's fire, according to a statement from the U.S. Forest Service.
In the document the Forest Service proposes to plant trees, control competing vegetation to ensure conifer survival and growth, control invasive plants, and reduce short-term fuels loading in the area burned by the fire, according to the statement.
The Forest Service will accept comments on the draft environmental document until Oct. 26.
