Unpacking dust-covered gear from his Tahoe Tessie art car, a lingering smile from the Burning Man celebration still clings to Michael Beaudoin's face. A cloud of dust escapes from a box of equipment as he sets it back to the pine-needle-covered earth of Tahoe. It seems that everything that went out to Burning Man came back permeated with a thin layer of gray playa dust. Nothing that went to the party will ever be the same again, including the people.
Once at the festival, held each year in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, a flame-thrower was fashioned to the top of Beaudoin's art car, giving it the ability to burst a crowd-warming fire almost the size of the '86 Suburban frame that Tahoe Tessie was built on.
“I had the greatest time driving it around the playa,” Beaudoin said.
Aside from a few minor wear-and-tear issues, the mutant vehicle held up just fine throughout the party, and Beaudoin is making plans to improve upon it for next year's celebration.

The ceremony took place on the Black Rock City playa, behind the Temple, at the 12 o'clock street position. Friends and family were in attendance, and despite the dust storm, a good time was had by all. “The full moon was in the background and it couldn't have been more perfect,” Teddy Noel said.
This year's theme was “Evolution,” which gave attention to artists for doing what it is they inherently do best: evolving thought into new realms. Next year's theme is “Metropolis,” giving Burners the chance to build Black Rock City into a futuristic urban landscape, with new architecture ideas to assist the populous in their enjoyment of the celebration.
Those planning to attend are advised to get tickets early, so as to save upward of $100 on the ticket price. They are available at www.BurningMan.com along with information about grants to assist artists with large-scale installation pieces.
