The play-in round of the Northern Regional Tennis Tournament was postponed on Tuesday in Carson City.
Weather permitting, the boys' and girls' doubles and singles play begins Wednesday at Centennial Park and Carson High School in Carson City.
South Tahoe seniors Michael Weber and Cameron Chase and sophomore Francisco Marin had their boys' singles matches postponed on Tuesday. The Vikings' Shanon Piazzo, Amanda Rives and Emily Rives will also have to wait an extra day to play their girls' singles matches. All are reset for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Centennial Park and Carson High.
The Vikings' three boys' doubles teams are seeded, so they won't begin play until Thursday at Reno High School. Jordan Zager and Nick Kushner, the once-beaten Sierra League's top seeds, open play at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Third-seeded Colton Marchesseault and Kolton Van Pelt and sixth-seeded Phillip Gaston and Derek Garofalos will also start the round of 32 Thursday.
South Tahoe's third-seeded girls' doubles duo Marriela Penollar and Lupe Ramirez begin action at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Caughlin Tennis Club in Reno. STHS coach Jenny Clark has reconfigured her remaining two doubles teams with Lindsay Martin pairing up with Rebecca Roberts and Angel Aquino combining with Cassandra Marin. Martin and Roberts, the Vikings' top two singles players during the regular season, open play at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Carson High, while Marin and Aquino received a draw into the 3 p.m. Thursday round of 32 at Caughlin.
The tournament continues through Saturday at various locations.
Vikes shut out Lakers
STHS took a break from Sierra League play with a nonleague match against North Tahoe on Monday in Tahoe City. The Vikings blanked the Lakers 5-0 behind two goals off the foot of Cassandra Diaz.
“It was a great game, a nice warm-up before playing Galena,” Clint Lockhart said. “We rested a lot of people who have been nursing injuries and got a lot of playing time for everybody.”
The Vikings were scheduled to play Galena on Tuesday, but the game was postponed until 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The Vikings can pull into a third-place Sierra League tie with the Grizzlies by beating them.
On Monday, Diaz put in a corner kick from Tori Lenstrom in the eight minute and added her second goal in the 56th minute on a shot from outside the 18. Ali Palacios, “Mickey” Segers and Becky Bruce also netted goals for the Vikings (11-4-1 overall).
Mikaela Buckley and Shannon Colleton each scored twice as the South Tahoe junior varsity girls' soccer team blasted North Tahoe 7-0 Monday. Ali Bannar, Annie Kate Genasci and Brittany Sanchez scored a goal for the Vikings, while keepers Allysa Lowe and Alisa Caro shared the shutout. Caro denied the Lakers on a pair of penalty kicks. Melanie Grady, Maddy Brubaker, Taylor Embry, Alicia Estrada, Janelle Buts, Emily Gardner, Brianna Carroll, Mariah Valdivia and Maddie Bowman also contributed to the shutout victory.
Warriors sweep Highlanders
Whittell High completed the first half of the Northern 2A League volleyball season with a 5-0 record, beating Incline 25-15, 25-23 and 25-12.
The Warriors stormed to an 11-1 lead in the first game, but had trouble winning game two, scoring two straight points to break a tie at 23.
“We had to reach deep in that one,” said Whittell coach Tony Fathergill. “We had great ball control, and we're playing team volleyball.”
Fathergill said the Warriors were led by Lauren Andrew, Austyn Herrera and Darby Reeder.
“Darby was really active and controlled the volleyball,” Fathergill said. “She also was serving well with the jump floats, and we had her hitting outside.”
Whittell also defeated Silver Stage in three games last Friday, 25-11, 25-19 and 25-16. Whittell will play host to North Tahoe at 5 p.m. Friday and Lovelock at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Mustangs took a game from the Warriors in the first meeting.
Quincy edges Whittell
Jenner Felton scored a goal on a throw-in from Blake Werle, but Quincy rallied for a 2-1 win over the Whittell Warriors' junior varsity soccer team on Saturday in Quincy.
The Warriors played some varsity members, but didn't start any seniors so the outcome counted as a JV matc.
Whittell plays host to top-ranked Incline at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
