Education briefs: Halloween events, spaghetti dinner, book sale coming up



Spooky stories and crafts for kids at the Zephyr Cove library

The Douglas County Public Library Lake Tahoe branch will present Saturday Stories and Crafts on Saturday at 3 p.m. Miss Carol will read Halloween stories and youngsters will make a Halloween decoration to take home.

The event is for children age 3 and older and all children should be accompanied by an adult. Sign up by Friday.

Historic society hosts Halloween events exploring Valley's past

The Carson Valley Museum and Historic Society is hosting a week of events celebrating local history with a touch of spooky Halloween flair. Thursday, take a nighttime walk around historic downtown Minden during the Haunted Minden Ghost Walk. Guided tours depart at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. from the CVIC Hall on Esmeralda Street in Minden. Tickets are $5 per person. On Friday, the Haunted Gardnerville Ghost Walk will stroll the historic streets of Gardnerville. Cost is $5 per person and will depart from the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center at 1477 U.S. Hwy. 395 in Gardnerville. Guided tours depart at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.

The Haunted Genoa Cemetery Tour is Saturday night at the cemetery on Main Street in Genoa. Guided tours depart every 15 minutes from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Cost is $5 per person.

The Haunted Genoa Ghost Walk will take place on Sunday morning. Guided tours depart from the Courthouse Museum in Genoa at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Tickets are $5 per person.

Friends of the Library seek materials donations for November book sale

The Friends of the Library is accepting donations of books and audio/visual materials (DVDs and books on tape/CD only) for an upcoming book sale in November. Materials should be in good condition with a copyright date of no earlier than 2005. All donations are tax deductible, with receipts available from the front desk.

To assist with the Friends of the Library Winter Book Sale, call the South Lake Tahoe Branch Library at (530) 573-3185 or sign up at the library. Library hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed Sundays and Mondays and is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. See www.eldoradolibrary.org for other happenings at the local library.

Spaghetti feed Thursday to benefit girls' soccer

A spaghetti feed Thursday night at Bert's Cafe will benefit the Goal Club, a nonprofit organization supporting the South Tahoe High School girls' soccer team. All proceeds benefit the players. This year, the team needs training equipment, bags and warm-ups. Dinner will be served from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the door for $10, or $5 for children 10 and under. There will also be a bake sale and a raffle for a Sony 40-inch flat-screen television donated by Accurate Audio/Video. Bert's Café is at 1146 Emerald Bay Rd.
