Casey DeLaCruz, 17, is traveling to the Republic of Ghana in December for her senior project. DeLaCruz plans to work on a pastor's school and in orphanages with Heaven Sent Ministries.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — When South Tahoe High School student Casey DeLaCruz was told to aim high for her senior project, she decided to travel all the way to West Africa.
The 17-year-old will spend her winter break assisting West Virginia-based Heaven Sent Ministries in orphanages and at a pastor's school in the Republic of Ghana.
“I was told to aim high,” she said, “so I aimed high.”
The senior project assignment “can be anything,” DeLaCruz said, but students are urged to try something related to a career path that interests them. DeLaCruz hopes to be a Christian minister or work in the nonprofit sector.
Teacher Frank Kovak recommended Heaven Sent after another student had success with the program, she said.
DeLaCruz, a member of the worship team at Sierra Community Church, is trying to raise $2,800 of the $3,500 required to make the trip. Her family will pay the rest.
“Prayers and donations — that's what I'm looking for,” she said.
To contact DeLaCruz, call (530) 541-8804, e-mail swimchick1692@hotmail.com, or write P.O. Box 16808, South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96151.
