Chain controls in place for many Tahoe roads

Storm could drop 8 inches of snow at lake level

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — A quick moving winter storm dropping 3 to 8 inches of snow at lake level has resulted in driving restrictions for many roads around the lake.

According to the Nevada Department of Transportation vehicles driving on Highway 28 are required to have snow tires or chains. Vehicles driving on Highways 50 and 89, except in the South Lake Tahoe city area, are also required to have snow tires or chains.

Vehicles driving on Highway 267 must have chains unless they have four-wheel drive. Interstate 80 west of Reno also requires chains for vehicles without four-wheel drive.
