SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Nearly 300 people lined up outside Grace Hall at St. Theresa Catholic Church on Monday to receive a hot turkey dinner and a cool slice of pie from Bread & Broth's annual Thanksgiving meal service.
Adam Smith, a 30-year-old construction worker from South Lake Tahoe, was in good spirits as he waited for his turn in the long line. Smith said he gets paid once a month; by Nov. 23, money was tight.
“It's Thanksgiving, so this is great,” Smith said.
A table with more than 100 jackets and other winter clothes donated by Our Lady of Tahoe in Zephyr Cove was positioned near the entrance. People stepped out of line to pick out their new coats.
“Look, she's wearing it now,” said Bread & Broth director Diane Weidinger, pointing to a toddler in a new pink parka.
The nonprofit, all-volunteer program has served hot Thanksgiving dinners to South Shore residents in need for the past 21 years, in addition to its weekly Monday meal service. Martha Trier, who was working the food line, said she's served many of the same people for the past seven years she's been a volunteer.
“I feel this is the only food these people get,” Trier said, continuing to dish food onto outstretched trays. “I try to send them off with as much food as they can get.”
To feed a crowd of 300, volunteers began defrosting 12, 12-pound turkeys last Thursday. Weidinger spent 12 hours making her grandmother's stuffing from scratch.
“This is from the heart,” Weidinger said. “We want them to experience the same dinner we will experience with our families.”
Volunteer Vicki Gonzales says she's normally a “seat of the pants cook,” meaning she tries to stretch every dollar and every ingredient in order to serve the Monday meals to anyone who's hungry.
But at the annual Thanksgiving dinner, the spread “is way over the top,” she said.
The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe sponsored the dinner with a $1,000 donation, and the employees of the Accommodation Station also took up a collection. Individual donors stepped forward as well.
“This is a good time to thank the community and all the individual organizations that help us,” Gonzales said.
