SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The City Council's decision to appoint David Olivo as the new City Treasurer was an easy one.
He was the only one who applied.
The City Council unanimously appointed Olivo to the Treasurer's seat during a special meeting on Tuesday morning at the Lake Tahoe Airport.
Olivo will fill the remaining year in the four-year term of former City Treasurer Stephen Wysong, who died of cancer on Dec. 9.
Olivo, 58, is Certified Public Accountant who has been a partner in South Lake Tahoe accounting firm Olivo, Zicko, Klover & Co., CPA's since 1978.
A graduate of the University of San Francisco, Olivo is a certified as an accountant in both Nevada and California.
He has prepared taxes for several local nonprofit organizations and has been active in several local groups, including the Lake Tahoe Angora Fire Fund, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and youth sports, according to his resume.
Following his appointment, Olivo said he intends to become a Certified California Municipal Treasurer and become a member of the California Municipal Treasurers Association — two actions City Manager David Jinkens recommended the City Council examine prior to making an appointment.
Olivo said he will run for treasurer during the November 2010 general election. He told the council he has held aspirations to be City Treasurer, but didn't run because he was well aware of Wysong's popularity.
“I always kind of wanted to be city treasurer, but I didn't want to run against Steve because I thought I would lose,” Olivo told the council on Tuesday.
Duties of the city treasurer include collecting money owed to the city, investing city money and providing at least monthly accounting reports to the city clerk according to California state law.
