South Tahoe High coach Chris Holmes wasn't going to offer any excuses for a lopsided defeat in the El Dorado Jen Vitell Memorial Tournament on Monday afternoon in Placerville.
Holmes certainly could have listed some reasons why his team was drubbed 74-40 by Lynbrook of San Jose.
“The just outworked us,” Holmes said.
Prior to the holiday tournament, the Vikings suffered injuries to two starters. Senior guard Cassandra Diaz was lost for the season due to a torn ACL, and senior post Alexis Nunes-Fenley will miss at least another two weeks with a second-degree ankle sprain. As a result, the Vikings only suited up eight players.
“We need to overcome that kind of stuff, and people have to step up,” Holmes said. “We have to believe that we can still be successful, which I think we can.”
In defeat, Vikings' senior guard Alexis Holmes scored a career-high 28 points. Holmes, the coach's daughter, showed versatility with her scoring.
“She attacked the basket early, played well in the post and shot the ball well from the outside,” coach Holmes said.
Alexis Holmes scored nine of her total on three-point baskets.
The Vikings used man-to-man and zone defenses, but nothing seemed to cool off Lynbrook (7-1). Coach Holmes, however, was pleased with the defensive play of Jennifer Lenstrom.
South Tahoe (2-5) is scheduled to play at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Games are being played at El Dorado High School.
