Skiers and snowboarders will unite Saturday at Sierra-at-Tahoe to throw down on a custom slope-style course in memory of Sierra freestyle skier Greg Smith and to spread seatbelt safety awareness Saturday in the Alley at
The California Highway Patrol will be at the Buckle Up Big Air event to promote seatbelt awareness. Smith died in a car accident in South Lake Tahoe in 2008. The competition is a tribute to Smith's life and his passion for skiing. The event also raises awareness of the importance of young people being safe in cars. All proceeds go to the Sierra Education Foundation and toward building a signature feature in memory of Smith.
The event will include the competition, music, an outdoor barbecue and raffle prizes.
The amateur division will compete on a custom rail and/or jump line. There will be from the sponsors to the top three in each division. The open divisions will jam on the custom jump line, with an emphasis on style, execution and putting down a solid run. Cash purse will pay to the top five in each open division and top three in the women's division.
Sponsors of this year's event include Neff, Lib Technologies, Dakine and 686.
Registration will be held in the Aspen Café before the contest from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Discounted lift tickets are available for competitors and their parents.
