Reno and Galena had a hard time beating South Tahoe High when the Vikings were a Nevada 4A cross country league member. Little changed in the first big meet of the season Friday with the Vikings now a 3A member.
South Tahoe, last year's Northern 4A regional champion, captured its third Nevada Jim Vanden Heuvel Twilight team title in four years on Friday night in Sparks.
All seven South Tahoe runners finished among the top-26 competitors and were separated by only 1 minute, 19 seconds. South Tahoe bested seven scoring teams to finish first with 59 points, while Reno came in second with 67 and Galena took third with 72.
Vikings' coach Dan Wilvers wasn't totally surprised that his team came away with the title. South Tahoe raced without Shelby McIntyre and lost Cassidy Cichowicz, one of the program's top runners, to a private ski school.
“We have a competent 1-7 without Shelby and Cass that packs very well, and that paid off for us,” Wilvers said. “We're working very hard and getting the most of what's there.”
Kaelyn Dion led the Vikings with a 10th-place result, finishing the 4-kilometer race at Shadow Mountain Park in 17:57. Kira Smith was 12th in 18:24, newcomer Julianne Brackett 15th in 18:38, Ali Messina 16th in 18:40, Karly Arroues 22nd in 19:04 and Torrie Zaccor 25th in 19:09 and Sarah Benedict 26th in 19:16.
“They all ran like I thought they would. However, I thought Kaelyn had a great race finishing 10th overall, and I thought Kira came through right where she should have,” Wilvers said. “Julianne Brackett is just learning to race and she and Ali ran very well.”
McIntyre, a 4A state 1,600-meter champion and 3,200-meter runner-up in track and field last spring, is recovering from a stress fracture. Wilvers said his talented junior is expected to resume training on Sept. 15.
“She's not run since June 13th, so we'll want to help her along slowly,” Wilvers said. “She is in very good shape from cross training all summer (and) may race at Stanford on the 25th simply because it's flat and on grass.”
In boys' race Bryan Jordan of Galena first in 13:31 and Whittell's John Robinson was second in 13:52. Connor Henderson led South Tahoe with a 13th-place effort (15:07), Tyler Myers was 26th in 15:56, Justin Dalton 32nd in 16:15 and Narturi Narciso 39th in 16:47.
In the team standings, Galena was first with 39 points, Reno took second with 53 and Whittell was fifth with 128. South Tahoe didn't field a complete team.
“The team ran very well, and we are looking forward in watching these guys progress over the course of the season,” said STHS coach Dominique Westlake. “Staying healthy and injury free is critical to us having successful season. We should have a full squad this Saturday in Sacramento at the Rosemont Invitational.”
South Tahoe's Dylan Maxwell won the JV boys' 4K race in 16:36. The Vikings' Conner Rettig placed fifth in 17:13, Austin Zaccor ninth in 17:22, Ross Kovac 17th in 18:32 and Chase Carlson 22nd in 19:02. The South Tahoe JVs were second to Reno in the team standings.
In the JV girls' 4K race, South Tahoe's Maddie Dant finished third in 19:34, Safir Wulfsberg-Gesmone ninth in 20:14, Becca Sanders 14th in 20:30, Danika Reyes 17th in 20:55, Molly Dant 21st in 21:14, Christy Walowit 22nd in 21:45, Kirsten Yang 24th in 21:49, Kate Albrecht 32nd in 23:12, Erin Moffat 33rd in 23:14, Bridget Moffat 36th in 23:29 and Kate Carlson 44th in 28:31. South Tahoe was second to McQueen in the final JV girls' standings.
The South Tahoe boys will compete Saturday at the Wolverine Invitational at Rosemont High in Sacramento. The STHS girls' next meet is the Woodbridge Invitational on Sept. 18.
