CARNELIAN BAY, Calif. — Officials are proposing to build a paved shared-use path that would give locals a different way to travel from Carnelian Bay to Dollar Point while also extending the region's growing network of cycling and hiking trails in an effort to encourage less vehicle transportation.The Dollar Creek Shared-Use Trail Project would extend the existing Tahoe City to Dollar Point trail, which ends near the intersection of Dollar Drive and Highway 28, to the end of Fulton Crescent Road in Carnelian Bay, through public lands commonly known as the Dollar and Firestone properties. The trail would wind near North Tahoe High School and past Dollar Creek.Placer County is spearheading the project, with assistance from the California Tahoe Conservancy and North Tahoe Public Utility District.The 2.5-mile path would extend “the backbone of the existing north shore bicycle trail network, linking residential uses to jobs, schools, shopping, and recreation and community areas,” according to the project description.According to the county, the trail's alignment would generally follow existing native surface trails and roads found on public parcels, encompassing other adjacent parcels nearby as needed to improve trail connections or reduce or avoid environmental effects.Placer would eventually present the project before Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to ensure it meets environmental regulations.
