Good mountain biking still to be had at Lake Tahoe

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The season’s mountain biking is still in full swing with the Aspen trees changing color and the recent rains keeping the trail dust at bay.

On Sunday, Oct. 16, Incline Village resident Hans Keller tested a newly installed drive train from the Village Ski Loft by enjoying the Tahoe Rim Trail. This ride starts where the TRT crosses Highway 267 on the Tahoe side of Brockway summit in Kings Beach.

Follow the Tahoe Rim Trail signs east on the single-track trail about seven miles to the summit of Mt. Baldy. On the way up (and especially down) keep your eyes on the rocky trail even though it is hard not to get distracted by the beautiful autumn colors and crisp air reminding us that Mother Nature is sending us the snow soon.

I thought I’d share this picture with my Tahoe neighbors I took at Mt. Baldy’s 9,271-foot summit. Even though our recent mild temperate days near the lake keep us wearing shorts, I’d like to remind fellow mountain bikers and Tahoe trail enthusiasts that the climate dramatically changes at about the 7,500 foot elevation in the mountains. So bring your Camelbak hydration pack filled with water, snacks, riding gloves, extra fleece pants and long-sleeve fleece shirts.

It felt like a walk-in freezer when I was on top of Mt. Baldy while capturing the picture of the clouds hovering over our gorgeous lake.

Unlike the section of the rim trail from the Tahoe Meadows at the top of Highway 431 to the top of the Tunnel Creek trail intersection where mountain bikers are only allowed on the trail on even days, the section of trail to Mt. Baldy is open every day for bikes.

Just remember that shortly past the Mt. Baldy summit heading east, mountain bikers are not allowed on the trail because the rim trail crosses through the Mt. Rose Wilderness area in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Enjoy the trails and please continue to be courteous to all the people sharing the trials, too.
