LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Kortge explains water meter position, qualifications

With experience from the boardroom to the field, I am qualified to represent the public on the Board of Directors Seat No. 3 for the South Tahoe Public Utility District.

My background includes:

• Homeowner for 22 years

• Degree in Accounting/Computer Science

• Elected as Zilwaukee Township Clerk

• Eight years on School Site Council and 9 years on PTA boards

• Business management experience

• National Ski Patrol host at Sierra-at-Tahoe

My reason for running for the Board of Directors is to keep our water rates low.

The California Legislators passed a state law for water meters for the entire state of California to be installed by 2025. If a district received grant money for the meters you are required to start metering the water after the meter is in. I feel they are breaking the 14th Amendment in the Constitution, the Equal Protection Clause.

The Equal Protection Clause requires each state to provide equal protection under the law to all people within its jurisdiction. It causes a lot of animosity in the neighborhoods and does not make us equal to be paying different rates in our community. Until all the meters are installed we should remain on the flat rate. I would like to get this changed ASAP.

Tahoe needs a total exclusion of the meters for quite a few reasons. We have no water shed going to Southern California our water shed goes to Nevada. We have about 62 percent second home owners, who are hardly ever here. We can only install meters in our basin from May - October unlike most areas who can dig all year. I would like to try one more time for this exclusion. District Staff tried once to get an exemption and almost received the exemption for the meters. I think we should try one more time going to the California Legislators with a lot more facts and figures.

I hope you think of Mary Kortge to represent you on the South Tahoe Public Utility District Board of Directors Seat No. 3.

Mary Kortge
