Get fresh produce, support local farmers

TRUCKEE/TAHOE, Calif. — If during the winter you find yourself sacrificing nutrition and fresh produce due to a lack of selection in the grocery store or seasonal price increases. There is a solution, Community Supported Agriculture or CSA, is a way consumers support local farmers by purchasing a portion of their harvest prior to the season.

How it works is you become a member and pay an upfront fee which comes out to be around $25 a week. During the season you will receive weekly deliveries at a predetermined location. You can choose vegetable bundle, fruit bundle or both and they are brought straight from the farm to you. The season is typically 24 weeks and you can expect about 10 lbs. of food each week. Share the bundle and cost with a neighbor or family member or even purchase for families in need in your area.

In the Tahoe area, Mountain Bounty Farms provides the delivery. MBF is a family owned and operated farm near Nevada City. They use organic growing techniques and provide a wide variety of produce in all seasons. The cost of their winter program for vegetables is $27.75 a week or $666 for the season.

The vegetable bundle includes weekly deliveries of arugula, asparagus, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, chard, cilantro, collard greens, cauliflower, fava beans, fresh onions, green garlic, kale, leeks, lettuce, mustard greens, parsley, potatoes, radishes, red daikon, salad mix, spinach, stir fry mix, shelling peas, sugar snap peas, turnips, winter squash, dried tomatoes, dried fruit, walnuts and pomegranates.

For a fresh fruit delivery the cost is $15.50 per week, or $264 for the season. This will include weekly deliveries of primarily citrus such as mandarins, oranges, grapefruit, and lemons. There will also be a scattering of apples, pears, persimmons and kiwis. This is for about 20 lbs. of produce, so it is very easy to share and you get what you pay for.

Your food is guaranteed fresh and with such a wide variety you will have everything you need to keep you family healthy. Nutrition is important especially during winter months when the chance of getting sick is higher. Paying upfront for the season is good too because you know you’ll have food all winter.
