TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Thereand#8217;s just something about a giant pyramid of Christmas presents for kids, including the reported 15,000 homeless children in Nevada. So the motorcycle clubs and many riders from the Sierra supported the Reno Toy Run with thousands of toys and thousands of dollars. The other part of the Christmas miracle was that more than 500 riders didnand#8217;t crash into each other on the parade route. Even I was able to wave to all of our adoring fans, otherwise known as the children watching the parade.
If youand#8217;re feeling generous at Christmas time, simply join the wave of Secret Santas who are going to department stores and paying off the lay-a-way accounts for complete strangers. Some are doing it to honor someone in their life, and some just because they feel led to do it. Heck, I may even put something on lay-a-way and see what happens. But hereand#8217;s your challenge, pay it forward like that for someone, or give something anonymously, and never tell a soul.
We should all extend a heartfelt thanks to all of the good Sierra people who have been laboring to end human trafficking and modern day slavery. The good news is Google just sweetened the pot with $11.5 million dollars for 10 organizations dedicated to that cause. It gives and#8220;Google itand#8221; a whole new meaning.
Imagine the suspense. Youand#8217;re at a Canadian minor league hockey game on Teddy Bear night, but you must wait for the home team to score. The tension builds, 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and finally 38 minutes into the game, and the home team finally scores. The fans all rise to their feet as one, hurling their treasures to the sky, and the game is delayed for 20 minutes while they gather up more than 25,000 Teddy Bears for local children. Elvis would have been proud. and#8220;Thank you, thank you very much.and#8221;
Theyand#8217;re still looking for the and#8220;God particleand#8221; in Geneva, Switzerland with the Large Hadrian Collider (atom smasher). Their physics quest is for the so-called Higgs Boson missing link thatand#8217;s supposed to explain how all particles get their mass. I can almost hear my Catholic friends saying, and#8220;If you want to understand all the mysteries of the universe, then simply go to Mass.and#8221; In fact, the ultimate mystery may very well be Christand#8217;s Mass, or what has come down to us as simply and#8220;Christmas.and#8221; The Message records that, and#8220;We look at this Son and see Godand#8217;s original purpose in everything created. For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels and#8212; everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment.and#8221; It will be interesting to see how the mysteries of physics and spirituality play out. One day we shall know fully even as we are fully known. Of that I have no doubt.
Weand#8217;ve had plenty to inspire us in 2011. The Fukushima 200 were the Japanese technicians who exposed themselves to excessive radiation in the nuclear plants after the Tsunami to prevent an even greater disaster.-- Then there were the ravaging tornadoes and the men who wrapped their bodies over their wives and children only to sacrifice themselves as buildings collapsed and blew away around them. But perhaps now we can just focus on the simple innocence of the babe in Bethlehem, on loveand#8217;s pure light coming into the world, on the One who ultimately sacrificed Himself for all of us, on the One who wants to overwhelm even your heart this Christmas season.
Sierra people, bring all of your compassion, forgiveness, and encouragement to those given into your life. Itand#8217;s what you were meant to do.
