Comics bring the laughs and their families to the Improv

I was going to say, it's nice to bring in the new and out with the old, but knowing comedian Kivi Rogers for as long as I have, it's kind of like "bring in the refurbished who has stood the test of time."

I can't think of a better guy to open 2012 than Kivi, who brought his family to Tahoe as he headlines the Improv at Harveys this week.

I have watched his kids grow up these past 11 years. He's a very likable individual and rarely have I ever seen him down in the dumps. Although when you read about his upbringing, it sure seems like he would have every right to be cynical about life. You see, Kivi (the second youngest of six boys and one girl) grew up in the Pueblo Del Rio housing projects where he learned to be street-wise at an early age.

Having a big family helped out, if anything just for the competition of being noticed. His comedy kicked in before he even knew it. Call it a defense mechanism or a way of turning the tables in his favor, Kivi told me that humor helped him during this time, and it made him popular.

Kivi's amassed a rather substantial list of credits over the years, including being on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," being nominated for Comedian of the Year by the National Association of Campus Activities and being one of the most sought after acts at the corporate level.

He's made guest appearances on "The West Wing," "Everybody Loves Raymond, " "VIP," "Diagnosis Murder," "Dharma and Greg" and has been host of television sitcoms and late night appearances.

Kivi appeared In the theaters with Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow in "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion" and "What I Did For Love." He was also in the movie "The Amati Girls," which starred Academy award winners Mercedes Ruehl and "Dancing with the Stars" diva Cloris Leachman. Kivi is also a contributor on the new Right Network and before you jump to any conclusions as to why it's plain to see that he is probably the best reason to even tune in to that network.

After all the accomplishments this past year what will 2012 hold? Well, what with more comedy festivals, projects in the works and a touring schedule that even tires me out just from reading, 2012 holds no limitations for the Kivi. It's nice that he's made Lake Tahoe the jump-start for the New Year.

Appearing with Kivi is Frances Dilorinzo, and get this: both are not only good friends but Frances also brought her family up here to bring in the New Year.

Before I even mention some of the credits she has to offer, her "Homemade Implants" video on YouTube is well over the 3 million hit mark and steadily climbing! If you haven't had the opportunity to check it out, do! It's really funny but, trust me, even funnier when you see her perform that exact same routine on stage.

Frances has always had the knack for making people laugh. It just came naturally for her. It wasn't until her collegiate years that others started taking notice and paying to go see her and she credits one of her college English professors for making that possible. As it turns out he encouraged all of his students in class to always add some humor when giving an assigned speech presentation. Did that ever pay off.

Once Frances started adding jokes to her presentation everyone was in hysterics and word got out quickly about this very attractive coed who not only gave intelligent speeches but also kept their interest up because of the sprinkling of humor throughout the presentation.

It served her well, too, because soon Frances was recruited to the speech team and became the first to win California's gold metal in the "Speech to Entertain" category two years in a row!

Frances continues to entertain people but now, instead of speeches, delivers jokes in a controlled environment and gets paid for it.

She's also performed overseas for our men and women in uniform. She may be a mother by day but at night, watch out!
