Truckee Tahoe Swim Team members posted personal best times throughout five grueling days of competition at the 2011 Speedo Gold CA/NV Winter Short Course Sectionals. It was the first time TTST had sent swimmers to this prestigious meet.
TTST’s Alex Straw, 16, Marcus Rodarte, 16, and Brittney Straw, age 14, all swam at the meet, which was held at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif., from Dec. 16-20. Luke Rodarte, 13, also qualified but did not attend.
The meet was held in an outdoor 25-yard pool where the weather somewhat cooperated. The pool was readied for the meet at the last moment, as three days before it was due to begin, pumps broke at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach and forced the change in venue. Belmont Plaza is an indoor 25-yard pool built to host the Men’s 1968 Olympic Trials.
While everyone was excited to have the opportunity to swim at a fast pool where numerous World and American records have been set, the Golden West College pool did not disappoint.
In a meet where some of the fastest times in the country were recorded, Alex Straw placed 22nd out of 145 swimmers in the 200-yard Individual Medley. He also competed in the 200 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 100 backstroke. Alex Straw has been swimming with the Truckee team since he was 5 years old.
Sprinter Marcus Rodarte competed in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, while Brittney Straw swam in the 200 Individual Medley and 200 breaststroke.
Rodarte started swimming at age 3 and was competing for the Truckee Tahoe Swim Team at age 6, while Brittney Straw began her swimming career with the Truckee team at age 5. All three swimmers also re-qualified for the long course (50-meter) sectionals in Clovis, Calif., in July.
TTST offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. Debbie Meyer, an Olympic Hall of Famer and Olympic gold medalist, heads up the coaching staff. Find information about the team at www.truckeeswim.com.
