Lake Tahoe weather: At long last, snow is in the forecast

A series of storms is headed to the Truckee/Tahoe region, according to the National Weather Service in Reno, although itand#8217;s unclear how much snow and rain is expected to fall by the end of the week.

and#8220;Significant precipitation in the form of rain and snow is likely to begin Thursday afternoon, although how much will fall is still uncertain,and#8221; according to a Hazardous Weather Outlook. and#8220;Snow levels may rise above 8,000 feet Thursday into Friday before falling over the weekend.and#8221;

Temperatures dipped Sunday night as a cold front swept through the region, bringing with it a small dusting of snow. The low temperature Monday is forecast at 0 degrees, according to NWS.

As the week progresses, high temperatures are expected to rise into the mid- to upper-40s, with the first chance for snow and rain on Wednesday.

According to the website tahoeweatherdiscussion.com, things could look a bit more like a Tahoe January on Friday and into the weekend.

and#8220;Total liquid looks to be around 3-4 inches through Saturday. Above 8,000 ft. we could pick up 3-4 feet with this storm with lots of rain at lake level,and#8221; the websiteand#8217;s Monday morning update reads. and#8220;The snow levels crash down to lake level on Saturday with moist flow continuing behind the cold front. Itand#8217;s hard to say how much snow falls in the lower elevations based on the timing of the snow levels coming down, but 1-2 feet possible above 7,000 feet and up to a foot at lake level. Weand#8217;ll have to watch closely during the storm.and#8221;

Furthermore, another storm could hit the region Sunday and early next week, according to various forecasts.

Below is an extended forecast from www.noaa.gov for the Truckee/Tahoe region.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 31. Calm wind.

Monday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 0. West wind around 5 mph.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 37. West wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Tuesday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14. Breezy, with a west wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Wednesday: Snow likely, mainly between 10am and 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 42. Breezy, with a west wind between 20 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Wednesday Night: A chance of snow before 10pm, then a chance of rain. Snow level rising to 6400 feet. Cloudy and breezy, with a low around 34. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Thursday: Rain. High near 48. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Thursday Night: A chance of rain. Cloudy and breezy, with a low around 36.

Friday: Rain. Cloudy and windy, with a high near 50.

Friday Night: Rain and snow. Snow level 6700 feet lowering to 6000 feet. Cloudy and windy, with a low around 34.

Saturday: Snow. Cloudy and breezy, with a high near 34.

Saturday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 17.

Sunday: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 34.
