Diamond Peak racers perform well at Jackson Hole, Sugar Bowl

Diamond Peak athletes Zane Bensing, Ian Reeves, Hannah Johnson and Ben Farrar raced in a Western Region FIS event this past Thursday through Sunday, Jan. 5-8, at Jackson Hole, Wyo.

The athletes fought hard and made phenomenal adjustments in their skiing despite many factors. The race was held on a terrain-intensive, bullet-proof surface; any and all mistakes were magnified tenfold. This being the case, Johnson still earned a respectable eighth place on Saturday.

Meanwhile, her little sister, Belle Johnson, raced to a second-place finish at Sugar Bowl Resort on Sunday, Jan. 8 for the Diamond Peak J4 ladies.

Sugar Bowl also hosted the J3 Wild West Slalom Qualifier this past weekend, Jan. 13 -15, in which the Diamond Peak J3s performed well overall.

The Diamond Peak J3 ladies had three athletes place in the top 10 on the first two days. Lauren Keller finished in the top five in all three races, earning a spot on the podium for her third-place finish on Sunday in brutally windy conditions.

“The wind was so fierce on Sunday, some of our smaller athletes were actually being pushed back by the wind,” said Diamond Peak Coach Eric Garoya.

Luke Rodarte of the Diamond Peak J3 men skied impressively at Sugar Bowl, stepping up to the podium twice for his second- and third-place finishes on Saturday and Sunday.

Diamond Peak's annual winter celebration fundraiser, Ullr Fest, returns from Friday through Sunday, Jan. 20-22. The event is free and open to the public.

All racers at the Tahoe League level and above will participate in a torch-lit parade on Show-Off during the Friday night bonfire and opening ceremony beginning at 5 p.m. But participants don't have to ski or snowboard to enjoy Ullr Fest.

On Saturday, the Ullr games begin on the deck of the lodge with a shovel race, poker run and snowman contest to name a few. “Under the Radar” will be performing both Friday and Saturday night, which also features a hearty Viking-style buffet dinner, dancing, and live and silent auctions.

A King and Queen of Ullr Fest 2012 will be crowned. Come in costume or straight from the slopes. The Ullr Fest Auction is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Diamond Peak Ski Team. Check www.DPSEF.org under “events” for a complete lineup of Ullr Fest games and activities.
