South Tahoe handily won the opening Tahoe Basin Ski League race of the season this past Thursday, a giant slalom held at Kirkwood, while Incline freshman Ian Reeves recorded an eighth-place finish individually to lead the Highlanders.
Incline competed with only two of its three skiers, as freshman Lauren Keller did not attend the race. Senior Davis Bedient rounds out the Incline roster.
Another Incline senior, Grace Dolan, who has won several individual state championship titles the past two seasons, is not racing this year due to an ankle injury, said Incline head coach Joe Humasti.
“Grace had a great career,” Humasti said. “It’s too bad she won’t be racing this year. I know a lot of people wanted to compete against her after all the success she’s had the last two years. But she’s taking the season off so that she can be ready for softball in the spring.”
Reeves posted a two-run combined time of 63.08 seconds, while Whittell’s Hughston Norton won the race in a time of 59.38. Bedient finished 18th in 66.51.
“Ian is only a freshman and he’s a very talented racer,” Humasti said. “We have three quality racers with him and Davis and Lauren. They have a lot of race experience.”
In the team scoring, South Tahoe’s boys and girls both claimed first place for a combined team score of 405 points to North Tahoe’s 357 — although the Lakers were missing a handful of their top racers. Truckee was third at 344, followed by Douglas (281), Whittell (274), Carson (267) and Incline (88).
