Krolicki presses case for 2022 Olympics in Reno/Tahoe

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki wants the 3.6 billion eyes that the Olympic Winter Games draws focused on one place in 2022: the Reno-Tahoe area.Krolicki outlined the case for the Olympics to return to the region at a Wednesday networking breakfast sponsored by the Northern Nevada Development Authority.Krolicki cited a $2.5 billion increase to British Columbia’s gross domestic product when Vancouver hosted the 2010 Games. Krolicki also said 1.8 billion people watched the games in 2010, fueling an increase in tourism to the Canadian providence. He also cited the $3 billion in public and private investment that was made when Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Games, creating 35,000 jobs in the area.“(Getting the games) can create short-term opportunities as well as long-term legacies,” said Jon Killoran, CEO of the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition and Krolicki’s co-presenter at the NNDA event. He said Salt Lake City’s airport went through a major expansion to handle the expected traffic, along with highway improvements and public transportation improvements, including a light rail system. The light rail became so popular that it is still being expanded upon, Killoran said.Krolicki, chairman of the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition, emphasized that he still is embarking on an “awareness campaign” for the potential that the Games could bring to the area. He said the U.S. Olympic Committee still has about a year-and-a-half before deciding which city it wants to nominate to the International Olympic Committee. In about 2015, the IOC would make its decision, he said.“Hopefully, we’ll be in position for hot pursuit, and hopefully with success, of the 2022 Olympic Winter games,” he said. But when one of the other attendees asked him what the “Vegas line” would be on getting the Games, Krolicki answered simply: “There’s no betting in the Olympic world.”
