I would like to respond to a letter from a Mr. James Pozniak appearing in the Jan. 14-17, weekend edition.
Mr. Pozniak recognizes a “group” who has been “decorating” power boxes throughout the city and expresses his appreciation for their efforts.
The “group” Mr. Pozniak has identified is a group of South Tahoe High School students known as the Sphere of Influence. A little over three years ago the “Sphere” partnered with the city to assist in quelling the increasing incidents of graffiti in our city. The concept was if you covered the graffiti with something, rather than simply covering it, the “taggers” would be less likely to repeat their vandalism on the same object.
The Sphere created scenes applicable to the Tahoe lifestyle in addition to some more “creative” works. Their efforts have resulted in the covering of graffiti on more than 100 power boxes, Dumpsters, walls and fences throughout our community. Their hard work has been instrumental in reducing the graffiti in our town. The Sphere's work can been seen Highway 50, Ski Run Boulevard and throughout the neighborhoods.
The students who make up the Sphere volunteer their time on behalf of the city. The cooperation between the Sphere and the city is a primary example of how a partnership between citizens who care and the city can make a difference in the quality of life here at South Lake Tahoe.
It is also an example of young people willing to get involved to make a difference in their community.
Thank you Mr. Pozniak for bringing the work of these exemplary young men and women to the attention of our community and thank you members of the Sphere for your dedication and perseverance.
