SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — During a two-day meeting in Las Vegas this weekend, the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners did not decide whether to remove the Lake Tahoe Basin from the state's 2012 bear hunt.

The board did form a committee to look at where the hunt should take place. Three wildlife commissioners, a sportsman representative from the Washoe County Advisory Board and Kathryn Bricker from NoBearHuntNV.org were appointed to the committee, according to NDOW spokesman Chris Healy.

Nevada Department of Wildlife staff has proposed prohibiting hunting of bears west of the Tahoe Rim Trail, effectively removing the hunt from where it has drawn the most controversy.

A recommendation on where the hunt should be allowed is expected to be before the board at its March 23 meeting, Healy said.

Over the weekend, the board moved the start of the hunt to Sept. 15 from the third week in August. The season will run through Dec. 31 or until the hunt's quota is met.

The commission did not set quotas for the 2012 hunt during this weekend's meeting. The commission is expected to determine 2012 quotas in May.
