INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation has managed an AmeriCorps grant for 12 years, making it one of the longest running AmeriCorps Programs in Nevada. Our legacy of experience, organization, and strong financial management has enabled our program to increase AmeriCorps membership to 16 full-time members (each serving 1700 hours) and seven Summer of Service members (each serving 300 or 450 hours) in the 2010-2011 grant year.Our program also has consistently high recruitment and retention rates for our members. In 2011, our program received more than 700 applications for the 14 available positions, and by recruiting nationally, we can ensure a wide variety of experience and a high level of talent. Additionally, two members from the 2010-2011 grant year enjoyed their AmeriCorps experience so much, they chose to stay with our program and complete a second term of service.We’re always looking to place AmeriCorps members at new organizations where we feel members will provide meaningful service as well as receive an enriching experience.The benefits of becoming an AmeriCorps Host Site are many. AmeriCorps members can provide the much need support to build agency capacity and to increase your organization’s visibility in the community. Through AmeriCorps member’s direct service activities, agencies have been able to fill in the gaps of service to the community and meet agency goals. AmeriCorps members have created new and innovative programs and supported those programs through successful grant writing as well.The collaborative aspect of the Parasol AmeriCorps team also is a benefit to all agencies, which are able to tap into the invaluable talent pool that members provide.So what is required to become a Parasol AmeriCorps host site?One must be a public charity, school, government agency, or faith based organization serving North Lake Tahoe residents of Washoe and Douglas counties. One must be recognized by the IRS as a tax exempt agency, 501(c)(3) or equivalent and in good standing. One must be incorporated in Nevada and in good standing with the state. One also must support program areas related to education, public safety, health or the environment as well as demonstrate the capacity for success and the completion of projects that are sustainable.And finally, one must agree to pay the $9,000 host site fee.
