Diamond Peak Ski Team athletes continue to impress

The USSA Northern J4/5 series resumed this past weekend at Squaw Valley with two days of racing.

On Saturday, the J4s raced giant slalom on a steep, demanding Red Dog course and the J5s ran a dual-panel slalom on a tricky Exhibition course.

Diamond Peak’s Casey Delaney enjoyed his first victory of the season in impressive fashion while Winston Pretti raced into a second-place finish for the J4 men, giving Diamond Peak a 1-2 finish on the podium.

Belle Johnson also put down two impressive runs as she took second place for the J4 ladies, and Emily Donahue earned a medal with a top-15 finish. For the J5s, Julia Holm took the podium for the ladies with her third-place finish and Matthew Smallhouse earned a medal with his 13th place for J5 men.

The venues were flipped on Sunday and conditions were especially firm and slick after lower temperatures moved in on Saturday night. Diamond Peak continued to impress with Pretti and Delaney both earning medals with very respectable fourth- and fifth-place finishes in the J4 men’s dual-panel slalom. Johnson skied to a sixth-place finish for the ladies.

All three of these Diamond Peak athletes — Delaney, Pretti and Johnson — have been invited to the J4 performance camp at Sugar Bowl on Feb. 25-26.

On the GS course, Holm raced to seventh-place finish for the J5 ladies. All the results from the weekend’s J4/5 races can be found at www.fwskiing.us.

The Diamond Peak Tahoe League athletes, meanwhile, raced a dual slalom at Sugar Bowl.

Diamond Peak’s Andrew Donahue took seventh place for the 7/8 boys on Saturday. Taylor Michael, Brooke Michael and Lucy Donahue placed 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively, for the 9/10 girls. Diamond Peak’s Carl Moller raced to fourth place on Sunday for the 13/14 boys.
