Gettin' down with Sierra Senior Services

TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Community Arts Center in Truckee was hopping during the Feb. 24 Mardi Gras Party, sponsored by Sierra Senior Services and funded by United Way. Choices Transitional Services clients and instructors, Tahoe Forest Health System Extended Care Center residents, Tahoe Truckee Unified School District transitional students and community members joined SSS in a celebration of the season with dancing, cookies, fruits, cake and refreshments.

The three-piece Catahoula Mardi Gras Band bounced out saucy Creole rhythms and slow old standards, offering a comment and tribute about Louis Armstrong, born in 1900, who broke race barriers, with an excellent rendition of “What a Wonderful World.”

“We had so much fun at the Veteran's Day Dance, we decided to do it again,” said SSS executive director Sarah Deardorff. “This was the last funding cycle from United Way, and it's great to share and enjoy it with the community.”

Dance instructors Rob McCarthy and Glenn R. Bushmire lead the ladies onto the floor for many a spin, with SSS SnowFest! Queen candidate Shelby Beals twirling like a professional.

Meet the SnowFest! Queen candidate March 4, 8-11 a.m. in the community dining room of the Truckee Donner Senior Apartments, 10040 Estates Drive during the monthly pancake breakfast. Cost is $7 adults and $3 children under 12.

Watch for Truckee Mayor Joan DeRyk Jones delivering meals March 21 during the national Mayor for Meals event. Sponsor a Meals on Wheels recipient: Cost is $15 meal for one day; $105 meals for one week; $450 meals for one month; $2,700 meals for six months or $5,475 meals for one year.
