Election 2012: Updated filing list for local races lacks incumbents

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The filing period for the 2012 primary election ends at 5 p.m. Friday, March 16, and as of press time Wednesday, not one incumbent for the four major Incline Village races has put in his or her papers to run again.

The four major races Incline voters should focus on for 2012 are the Incline Village General Improvement District board of trustees, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District board of directors, Washoe County School Board, District A and the Washoe County Commission District 1 seat.

Here’s a breakdown of those races, as well as the people who hold the seats that expire at the end of 2012:

• IVGID: Bea Epstein, Ted Fuller, Chuck Weinberger

• NLTFPD: Dale Smith, Chris Plastiras, Wayne Fischer

• County Commission, District 1: John Breternitz

• School Board, District A: Dan Carne

Here is a list of people who have filed for the above races, as of press time Wednesday:

• IVGID: Tim Callicrate; George Del Carlo; Jim Smith; Fred Pritchard

• NLTFPD: Chris May; Paul Zahler

• County Commission, District 1: Marsha Berkbigler (a Republican); Andrew Diss (a Democrat)

• School Board, District A: Brian Flanner; Dale Richardson

A fifth race is for Incline Village justice of the peace. According to Washoe County Elections, current JOP E. Alan Tiras is running unchallenged, as he was the lone candidate to declare during the early filing period for judge seats.

According to previous reports, Breternitz has decided not to run.

Other primary races for which registered voters in Incline can partake include:

• U.S. Senator (Dean Heller, Republican, currently holds)

• U.S. Representative (Mark Amodei, Republican, currently holds)

The 2012 primary election is June 12. According to previous reports, primaries are held for any office that has more than double the number of people applying than the number of positions open.

Therefore, seven or more people would have to file for the three open seats in the IVGID and NLTFPD races in order for a primary to be held. If one takes place, the top six vote-getters move on to the November 6 general election.
