Lake Tahoe weather: Winter storm could bring 2-3 feet of snow by Saturday afternoon

TAHOE/TRUCKEE — A winter storm warning is in effect from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno, bringing the potential for 2 to 3 feet of additional snow to higher elevations.

The higher snowfall amounts are forecast above 7,000 feet, according to NWS, with 9 to 18 inches possible at lake level.

During the day Friday, rain and snow will interchange as temperatures fluctuates before fully turning to snow in the later afternoon. The highest amounts of snow are expected near and west of Highway 89 in California.

Travel conditions are expected to be dangerous, and most passes will have chain and/or snow tire restrictions in place by Friday evening. Stay tuned to road updates at www.tahoebonanza.com/roadconditions.

Friday: Rain. High near 45. Breezy, with a southwest wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Friday night: Rain before 11pm, then rain and snow between 11pm and 2am, then snow after 2am. Low around 25. South wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible.

Saturday: Snow showers. High near 33. West wind between 5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Saturday Night: Snow showers. Low around 16. West wind between 5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Sunday: Snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 30. South wind between 5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Sunday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 12. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Monday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Monday Night: A slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22.

Tuesday: A slight chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 42.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 24.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 50.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 25.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 51.
