Bantams end season on high note

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Grizzlies Bantams Youth Ice Hockey Team has had a trying season and they ended it with a weekend pair of home games against the league leading Capital Thunder team this past weekend.

Saturday's game was reminiscent of when the two met in Roseville a month ago and the Grizzlies dropped an 8-0 decision. This time around, the Grizzlies lost 9-1 with Spencer Olson registering the lone Tahoe goal.

Going into Sunday's game, expectations were about as cold as the ice and early on it looked like the result would be similar as the Thunder scored twice in 19 seconds early in the first period. But the boys from Tahoe did not give up and just over half-way through the period AJ Marino scored to cut the Thunder lead in half with assists from Janez Demsar and Matt Newberger.

The re-energized Grizzlies including, Joe Albrecht and Cullen Kauffman, kept up their aggressive play. With 4:29 remaining in the opening period Carson Bailey banged home the tying goal from a scramble in front of the net and an assist from Noah Paul. The teams skated hard for a scoreless second period and the Grizzlies entered the final period tied with a team that lost only twice all year.

With just four minutes gone in the third period, the Thunder struck for the go ahead goal. There was still plenty of time for the boys in cardinal and white to get even - and they did.

The physical play picked up and with just under six minutes to play Bailey struck again and jammed home a loose puck to tie the game at 3-3, again with an assist to Paul. The Thunder skated hard to score, but goalie Chase Amestoy, aided by defensemen Ryan Brown, Doug Knudsen and John Moffat, turned away the rest of the 36 shots he faced and the Grizzlies earned a well deserved point. While they still ended up in fifth place and out of the playoffs, it was a good way to finish the season.
