Incline baseball | Sparks sweeps two from Highlanders

Incline's baseball team began Mount Rose League play with a pair of losses at Sparks this past Saturday, 8-0 and heartbreaker, 6-4, in extra innings.

The Highlanders (3-3) fell victim to Sparks starter Keiffer Putman in Game 1, as Putman limited Incline to just three hits while striking out nine in a complete-game shutout effort.

Jack Clouthier hit a double, while Cam Powell and Tommy Dolan had a single apiece.

Powell, who started on the mound, ran into trouble in the third when the Railroaders (4-1) scored six runs to take a 7-0 lead. He allowed seven hits and six walks while striking out four. Kyle Clouthier threw two scoreless innings in relief, giving up only two hits.

The Highlanders battled back in the second game only to lose on a two-run, walk-off home run off the bat of senior James McCarty in the bottom of the eighth inning.

After Sparks took a 1-0 lead off of Dolan in the bottom of the first, Incline answered with a run in the second and three more in the third to take a 4-1 lead. But Sparks scored two in the bottom half of the inning and once more in the fifth to knot the score at 4-4.

The Highlanders had a golden opportunity in the top of the eighth when they loaded the bases, but Sparks starter Jared Longland managed to get out of the jam unscathed to set up his team for the win.

Dolan threw seven innings before Kyle Clouthier relieved him in the eighth and was tagged with the loss. Dolan, who gave up three hits and six walks while recording eight strikeouts, helped his cause by hitting his third home run of the season in the first inning.

Davis Bedient had two hits and an RBI, Tommy Thompson had two hits, and Chip Bouchard had a hit and an RBI. Powell, Kyle Clouthier and Andrew Carlson each had one hit for the Highlanders.

Longland pitched all eight innings for Sparks, striking out 14 Highlanders along the way.
