INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Northern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking volunteers to help support the Measles Initiative — a partnership committed to reducing measles deaths globally. Launched in 2001, the Measles Initiative is a partnership — led by the American Red Cross, the United Nations Foundation, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF and the World Health Organization — committed to reducing measles deaths worldwide. The Measles Initiative has supported the vaccination of more than 700 million children in more than 60 countries, helping to reduce measles deaths by 78 percent (between 2000 and 2008).Still, more needs to be done. While measles may not be a threat to individuals in the Lake Tahoe area, it continues to affect more than 500 children a day around the world. In response to this global epidemic, the American Red Cross in Incline Village is planning a series of educational and entertaining community events to raise awareness and fundraise during Measles Awareness Week, April 2-7. On April 7 at 6:30 p.m., a lecture and raffle event will take place at the Donald W. Reynolds building in Incline VillageAdditionally, students will become educated about measles through interactive presentations at Incline Middle School and volunteers will fundraise by selling Measles Initiative pins at Raley’s in Incline Village. Every dollar raised will vaccinate one child against this deadly, but preventable diseaseVolunteers can contribute to these events in the following ways: assist with presentations at Incline Middle School, donate raffle items, attend the lecture and raffle event, or sell Measles Initiative pins at Raley’s throughout the week.
