Nora (Nonie) C. O’Leary, at the age of 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Rossmoor, Walnut Creek, Ca., March 25, 2012. Nonie was married to the late Jack O’Leary for 49 years, who was considered by many as the unofficial mayor of Incline Village.Nonie, a great athlete as a tennis player and swimmer, turned to golf after raising five children. Before moving to Incline in 1980, Nonie founded the nine-hole golf group the “Castlettes.” and served as President of Nine andamp; Sixteen Holers at Castlewood Country Club. After moving to Lake Tahoe and golfing with the guys, who Nonie said played too slow because they were looking for their lost balls, started a new ladies golf club, The Teesters. Nonie felt Incline’s new ladies club would give every “girl” the love of the game of golf, even if they didn’t know how to play yet! Nonie is now sending love to her “GIRLS” from the Nineteenth Hole!Nonie was born in San Francisco to James and Ellen (Nellie) Kearney Cotter both from County Cork Ireland. Survived by brothers James (Kari) Cotter, Gary (Lynn) Cotter, and her children Tara, Jake (Elke Hoffman), Denise (John) Rosso, Deon (Don Leary), Kevin (Susan) O’Leary. Nonie’s grandchildren are Erin and Megan Hudson, Devon (Ben) Gibson, Brandon Garcia and Kendall O’Leary. In Nonie’s early years she attended St. John’s Grammar School S.F., graduated from Holy Names H.S. in Oakland. After getting to know Nonie, this is one you would understand — Nonie was the first female civilian employee for the Marine Corp during the war from 1942-44!! A memorial service will be held in the future.
