Kirkwood closes mountain after inbounds avalanche

Kirkwood Mountain Resort was forced to shut down lifts after an avalanche was triggered inbounds Sunday.

A skier reported to ski patrol that a small avalanche had occurred toward the top of Vista lift at about 12:30 a.m., said spokesman Michael Dalzell.

Ski patrol opted to close other lifts while monitoring the snowpack for stability. The lifts were closed for about three hours, Dalzell said.

In the 24 hours prior to the storm, the mountain received 21 inches of snow. Throughout the day, the temperatures rose from 13 degrees in the morning to 42 degrees in the middle of the day, creating instabilities in the snow, Dalzell said.

The mountain was reopened that afternoon and was open throughout Monday with no avalanche activity reported.
