Driver unhurt after falling asleep, crashing Walmart semi truck at I-80 on-ramp

TRUCKEE, Calif. — It was quite the scene in west Truckee on Thursday after Mark Alvarez of Hayward, Calif., fell asleep at the wheel of a Walmart semi truck at 10 a.m. while driving westbound on Interstate 80.

His trailer drifted, took the exit ramp at Donner Pass Road and jumped the pavement, said California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Prisco.

While no one was hurt and no other vehicles were damaged, Alvarez was not dressed for the snowy weather and was removed from the scene by CHP officers.

The big rig was carrying daily products such as eggs and milk. Caltrans Supervisor Glenda Potvin said 125 gallons of fuel and 10 gallons of oil were removed from the truck during the clean-up process.
