South Lake Tahoe may have a new tenant for its brand-new boat house at Lakeview Commons. The city's Parks and Recreation Department has recommended South Tahoe Stand-Up Paddle to fill the space.
The City Council will vote on the recommendation at its May 1 meeting.
The Parks and Recreation Department received three responses to the request for proposals, issued last year.
"South Tahoe Stand-Up took their response to the RFP to another level," said parks and recreation director Stan Sherer. "Not only did they want to run a rental operation, but they took it further with lessons and tours."
South Tahoe Stand-Up owner Chris Brackett's ambitions for the area and the growing sport of stand-up paddling, or SUPing, go beyond even what was outlined in his pitch for the new boathouse.
"This is going to be the new stand-up capital," Brackett laughed while working around his Harrison Avenue store. "The flatwater capital will be right here."
Typically, the City Council votes with the recommendation of its departments, said councilman Tom Davis. If the council confirms the recommendation, the Brackett family will get busier than they are right now, Chris Brackett said.
"This last weekend was so crazy," he said. "I was sprinting nonstop everywhere I went."
Brackett's plan for the boathouse includes offering more than 100 rental SUP boards, canoes, kayaks and pedal boats. He'd also like to have stand-up paddle tours along the South Shore and lessons for those new to the activity. Though separate from the concession, he's already started planning a large-scale SUP event, Race the Lake of the Sky, at the new beach.
Brackett said, if they are awarded the contract, they'd like to move into the space as soon as possible. The contract for the upstairs food concession at the park has not yet been awarded. The parks and recreation department hopes to have a recommendation for that by the May 17 City Council meeting, Sherer said.
The city is planning a grand opening for the park on June 20 that will lead into the Lake Tahoe Paddle Festival June 23-24.
