James A. Gallo, Jr. of Litchfield Park and Prescott passed away on April 23, 2012. Jim was born on July 11, 1920 in Haverstraw, NY, the son of James Aloysius and Catherine Wimple Gallo. He was married to the former Jean Wheeler Turner of Honolulu, Hawaii for 60 years.
While a student at Haverstraw High School, Jim was the only four letter athlete in the history of the school. He was an outstanding member of the football, basketball, baseball and track teams. He graduated a semester early from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY in 1942, doubling up on his studies to enlist in the United States Marine Corps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
From boot camp Jim was sent to OCS and then to Guam, where his valor and gallantry earned him a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. Throughout his illustrious 31 year Marine Corps career, he was highly decorated and was respected by his fellow officers and enlisted men alike.
During his military career, Jim and his family were stationed around the globe, in such places as Saipan, Finland, where he was awarded the White Rose of Finland, Camp Lejeune, and Beirut, Lebanon, where he was the Defense Attache. After retiring from the Marine Corps as a Colonel, he and Jean were able to continue their travels, and had homes in Singapore, Honolulu and Lake Tahoe. Family was the most important thing in Jimand#8217;s life, and his children and grandchildren are left with many valuable life lessons. He taught them by his outstanding example.
Jim is survived by his wife Jean, of Litchfield Park and Prescott, his children Gail Gallo Seifert of Nanuet, NY, Christine Gallo Linguanti of San Francisco, Ca, and Wendy Ann Gallo of Lake Tahoe, Nevada.; his grandchildren Christopher (wife Michelle) of Bardonnia, NY, James, of Valley Cottage, NY and Meghann Seifert of Jersey City, NJ; Caitlin Morris Wong (husband Jeff), great-granddaughter Isabella Seifert; his beloved niece Barbara Rosen Pedri (husband Richard) of Haverstraw, his niece Michelle Turner; his nephew Michael Turner (wife Teresa) and his devoted dog, Mike. Jim also leaves behind his wonderful friends throughout the world.
A memorial service was held on Friday, April 27, 2012. A funeral with full military honors will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
