Obituary: Thomas Francis Heron

Suddenly, on May 10, 2012, Thomas Francis Heron went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Tom was born on December 7, 1944 in Riverside, Rhode Island to the late Abigail and William Heron. Tom joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served his country honorably for five years. During this time, he was on a guided missile destroyer in the Cuban Missile Crisis and helped American civilians off the island of Cuba.

Tom and his family moved to Tahoe 35 years ago, and 11 years later he and his wife started His Touch Cleaning, a janitorial cleaning service for the Tahoe area. Recently, Tom was also the janitor at the Tahoe City and Squaw Valley post offices. He enjoyed his work because it meant he could make new friends and visit with the old ones. He always had a smile as he greeted each person that came and went through his day and looked forward to sharing a word or two with them. At Christmas time he would proudly display his white beard, put on his Santa hat, and hand out candy canes to the kids.

There are so many things to say about Tom, but three things will always ring true. He loved the Lord, he loved his family, and he loved his friends. Tom loved his wife Brenda, who was also his best friend and travel companion. Together they visited Mexico and Hawaii and spent a month traveling across the United States. Tom and Brenda had three children. He was so proud of them and all that they had accomplished. He attended every High School sport his children were in and was involved in their lives through all of the ups and downs. Tom absolutely adored his five grandchildren. They were the apple of his eye and he enjoyed spending as much time with them as he could.

Tom’s church family was also very important to him, and sharing God’s word to anyone who would listen was one of his greatest passions. Because of this he made it a priority to be available to anyone who needed help whenever he could.

Tom, you were a friend to all who knew you and will be remembered for your great smile, silly jokes, and friendly face. We will always love you and miss you.

Tom leaves behind his beloved wife of 46 years, Brenda; his children, David (wife Kirsten and their children Jake and Ellie), of Bend, Oregon; Jodie Heron-Joslin (husband Bill and their children Masha, Bota, and Melody), of Fair Oaks, California; Todd (wife Dee) of Fort Collins, Colorado; his brothers Ed (wife Lou) of Reno, Nevada and John McElroy (wife Marsha) of Riverside, Rhode Island. His brothers Sumner and Donald preceded him in death.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, May 19th at 3:00 pm, at Tahoe Faith Fellowship, 330 Fairway Drive, Tahoe City, CA. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to help with the loss and words of hope can be sent to Brenda Heron, P.O. Box 6252, Tahoe City, CA 96145.
