and#8216;Sparkle Pony' wins it for Mountain Forge

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Truckee/Tahoe is full of arts and artisans showcasing their creativity through paint on canvas, details in woodworking, ceramics, jewelry, and, lest we not forget, metalwork.

Our resort community has seen recent growth in craftsmanship through the influx of gated communities like Lahontan and Martis Camp. However, before the glamorous Martis Camp Lodge and Family Barn kicked off a boom of development, there was Lakeshore Boulevard in Incline Village, Nev., the west shore of Lake Tahoe, and Squaw Valley's Hidden Lake.

In those beginnings was a little blacksmith shop on the River Road into Tahoe City run by an Austrian named Hans Standteiner. That shop has grown to become Mountain Forge, a modern-day, high-tech blacksmith shop crafting products from 26-foot-tall colorful steel flowers to delicate 1-inch bronze acorns.

To local builders and homeowners, Mountain Forge is synonymous with high quality decorative metalwork; and now the blacksmithing community at large has also come to recognize the skill and talent of the Mountain Forge boys. At the California Blacksmith Association's Annual Spring Conference held in Petaluma, Calif., Mountain Forge took top honors at an impromptu forging competition. Matt Cristiano and Anton Standteiner won first place with their forged connections, while Colby Kalmbach and Robby Salas won third with their forge-welded piece entitled Sparkle Pony. The conference was attended by more than 450 association members who voted for their favorites after the close of the three-hour competition.

“It was an honor to win, and it made me proud to see my boys celebrated by our contemporaries in this way,” said Anton.

Mountain Forge, Inc. is located at 10950 Industrial Way in Truckee. Visit www.mtnforge.com or call 530-550-0511.
