Truckee Pump Track announces grand opening Sunday, June 10

TRUCKEE, Calif. — It’s finally ready to ride!

That’s right, the Truckee Pump Track Project is complete. After just one year of fundraising, organizing and construction the track is ready for riders to rip. On Sunday June 10, noon-4 p.m., the general public is invited to the TPTP grand opening at Riverview Sports Park. This family event will include a free barbecue and drinks, so drop everything, grab the kids and the bikes and get ready for an afternoon of summertime fun, Truckee style. -

Some readers may not be familiar with this type of biking so a little explanation is needed: A pump track is a compact skills building course that is designed to teach rhythm and the use of momentum when riding. The Truckee Pump Track links together berms (banked turns), whoops (evenly spaced bumps) and jumps in a circuit of continuous movement. Imagine a skate park built into a course in which the rider can propel his or herself forward using the built-in features. Serpentine by design, this pump track packs a lot of fun into a relatively small space.

The track’s opening is not only a celebration of the joy derived from cycling, but it is also an affirmation of the community spirit and organization present in Truckee. From private donations of services, materials and money, to a multitude of biking organizations’ support, this town came together and in short order the goal was achieved. That doesn’t mean the job was easy — quite the contrary — but the biking community deserves recognition for making this pump track possible.

Additionally, special thanks to Brooks McMullin and Mark Featherstone are an order. Their consistent efforts and hours spent on the phone and out in the dirt digging have turned a “wouldn’t it be cool” conversation into reality. Finally, the Truckee Sanitary District deserves a big thank you for allowing the track to be built on the land they manage.

Several sponsors, supporters and industry folks will be present for the grand opening including: Truckee Trails Foundation, Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association (TAMBA), Clif, Cyclepaths Bike Shop, Tahoe Mountain Guides, Truckee Airport District, Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District, the Auburn Ski Club, Olympic Bike Shop, Gravity Shop, International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) and track’s builder, Randy Spangler. Plus many more. This party is a great way to learn a new style of riding and meet the people and businesses that help keep our butts in the saddle and on the trail. -

Coinciding with the opening of the Pump Track is the recently renovated BMX Track which will be open to all on that Sunday. See ya’ll there.
